Music Theatre at UB

The B.F.A. Music Theatre program at UB encompasses the ever-widening spectrum of theatre arts that ranges from performance art to opera and includes Broadway musicals, cabaret, and dance works. The B.F.A. in Music Theatre embraces all of these forms, including the research and creation of new works of music theatre and the re-envisioning the classics for the twenty-first century.

UB's B.F.A. Music Theatre program aims to train complete music theatre artists. We seek to prepare our students to succeed as multi-faceted professionals in an increasingly competitive and challenging field. To provide a comprehensive course of study, our tripartite curriculum includes classes in acting, music, and dance. Students also study technical theatre and design, and they have the opportunity to study choreography and stage direction.

We aim to prepare our students for the pursuit of a professional career in musical theatre. B.F.A. Music Theatre students take courses in the Department of Theatre & Dance, as well as in the Music Department. Our curriculum covers performance techniques, as well as music theory and music theatre history.

The Department's faculty members maintain national and international careers that include productions on and off-Broadway as directors, actors, choreographers, musical directors, and dramaturgs, as well as scholarly publications. By working in professional theatre while mentoring the department's students in their course work and departmental productions, our faculty provides students with a vital link between the worlds of academic and professional theatre and dance.
