The Department has longstanding relationships with several professional theatres in Buffalo. UB Theatre & Dance faculty and emeritus serve as artistic directors of the Irish Classical Theatre Company, Jewish Repertory Theatre, and Shakespeare in Delaware Park, and direct regularly these theatres as well as others. Acting students audition and perform at these theatres on a regular basis, as well as at the Kavinoky Theatre and MusicalFare.
B.F.A. students who have been offered a role at one of these theatres must apply to their area director for a waiver from the requirement that they make themselves available for casting in all department productions. Each year our students accept an average of five to ten roles in Buffalo's professional theatres, including lead roles. Internships at professional theatres can play a vital part in our students' education and training, and we make every effort to help students incorporate these opportunities into their training when possible and beneficial.
B.A. Majors with emphases in Directing and Dramaturgy have worked as production dramaturgs and assistant directors for these and other theatres. The department is also developing connections with the internationally-recognized Shaw Festival in the area of dramaturgy and with other theatres in Toronto and Southern Ontario. We look forward to expanding opportunities for our students throughout the Western New York and Southern Ontario region. Students interested in these opportunities work with a faculty advisor, who oversees the internship.
