All Dance Majors must audition for acceptance into the program.  There are no individual auditions available.  Students must audition on one of the dates below only.

Students entering UB in Spring or Fall 2010:

New York City Audition:  Saturday, January 30, 2010 - 9 a.m.

*Please note that there are two auditions time choices on the audition dates in October and February 19th.  If you plan to take the university tour through the Admissions Department, which begins at 1 p.m., you must attend one of the 9 a.m. auditions.

•  Please come ready to attend dance classes, no prepared piece is required.

•  Bring ballet slippers and jazz shoes, no Pointe or tap shoes.

•  Proper attire includes: solid colored tights and leotards or unitards, or tight dance pants; no bare midriff or excessive layers.

•  Classes include ballet, modern and jazz. There is no tap class. Tap placement is determined by years of experience.

•  Cost of Audition Workshop is $25.00. Checks must be received before confirmation of audition is sent. Cash and credit cards cannot be accepted, please send a check or money order only (see below).

After you submit the on-line form, you must send an Audition Workshop Fee check in the amount of $25.00 payable to the Department of Theatre & Dance and mail to: Department of Theatre & Dance, Audition Workshop Fee, University at Buffalo, 285 Alumni Arena, Buffalo, NY 14260. After your check is received, you will be mailed a confirmation of your audition date.

PERFORMING ARTS PROFILE:

Prospective DANCE students are required to bring a PERFORMING ARTS PROFILE with them to the audition.  This profile should be clearly labeled with the student's name and should include:

1.  Training History

2.  Dance students - two references (names and addresses only)

     Music Theatre students - two reference letters that include the references' contact information

3.  Career Goal Statement (one paragraph, 50 words)

4.  3" x 5" or larger photo - head shot or dance pose

Dance auditions are held in the UB Center for the Arts Dance Studios. Use the Center’s main entrance. Take the central staircase down to the lower level. Turn left. The dance studios are straight ahead on the right.

A Parking Pass is required if you are going to park on campus. You will receive one with your confirmation letter.

For the audition each student must:

  • Be prepared to sing two contrasting songs from the standard Music Theatre repertoire ( No “American Idol” style pop, rock, etc.) Please bring the music for your songs. An accompanist will be provided. Music must be in the candidate's key. Selections are to be no longer than 32 bars in length.
  • Be prepared to attend dance classes. Proper dance attire includes: solid colored tights and leotards or unitards, or tight dance pants; no bare midriff or excessive layers. Bring ballet slippers and jazz shoes.
  • Prospective students are asked to present an age-appropriate serious or comedic monologue from a classic or contemporary play. The monologue is to be no longer than one minute. If the monologue is longer, the auditionee may be cut off.
  • A Music Theory placement test will be administered.
  • Performing Arts Profile required, see below for information.

THEATRE PERFORMANCE:


Prospective students interested in applying for the BFA Theatre Performance (Acting) program should schedule an appointment to audition in Buffalo or New York City.  You may also audition in the spring of your freshman year at UB.  An audition is only required for admission to the BFA Theatre Performance (Acting) program, not for the BA Theatre major, which is a liberal arts degree.  BA Theatre majors take acting courses, audition, and are cast regularly in productions, but they are not guaranteed spots in the BFA acting sequence courses.

For the audition each student must:

  • Perform two contrasting monologues from published pays, not to exceed a total running time of four minutes.  The monologues may be from comedies or dramas of any period, although more modern works are preferred.  The pieces must be memorized.  Try to include some physical movement, and do not perform either monologue sitting down for the entire piece.
  • Wear neat clothing that honestly shows how you look and move.  Avoide constrictive or trendy clothing and chunky shoes.
  • Choose material that is appropriate for your age, experience, and character range.  Avoid dialects, extreme physicality, and props.
  • Be prepared to answer some brief questions from the auditioners about your experience, strengths, weaknesses, and goals.  Be honest, direct, and relaxed.  We want to get to know you, and we want you to do your best.
