Graduate Funding

There are several ways to partially or fully fund graduate study in Theatre Performance.

Steig Olson Scholarship

MA and PhD students are eligible to apply for a Steig Olson Scholarship, a named scholarship in honor of Steig Olson, Class of 1948. Awards are granted to students enrolled in the department's Theatre programs. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate financial need. Both MA and PhD students are eligible to apply and the award may be combined with other sources of support, including Teaching Assistantships. Amounts given may vary year to year, but will usually be approximately $1000-3000 per year.

Teaching Assistantships (PhD)

The Department of Theatre & Dance at the University at Buffalo (UB) offers Teaching Assistantships (TAs). Each new assistantship provides a stipend of $13,500 for ten months, a full tuition scholarship, and generous health benefits. TAs may be assigned to assist a professor with a large lecture course and/or teach a course in the student's area of expertise. Out-of-state students (not international) are required to apply for New York State residency during their first semester, and New York State residents must apply for TAP (Tuition Assistance Program).

Once awarded, students are eligible to renew the assistantship for 3 additional years, which can be used to fund up to two years of coursework and two years of dissertation research and writing.

Research & Travel Funding

In addition to other forms of support, PhD students are eligible to apply for departmental travel funds for research and conference travel, up to $1500 over the course of graduate study. Students must submit a proposal and preliminary budget to the Director of Graduate Studies.
