Welcome to the University at Buffalo's Department of Theatre & Dance. Apply to launch your career on stage and behind the scenes. Come to train as a scholar-artist. Be our guest and take in a musical, drama, or dance performance.
In our department you will study with artists/technologists/educators who are active practitioners and renowned scholars. Faculty are members of professional networks including Actor’s Equity Association, American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, American Society for Theatre Research, Dance Masters of America, International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, National Dance Education Organization, Stage Actors Guild, and United Scenic Artists. They have appeared on and off Broadway, on regional stages, in major dance festivals, in documentaries, and in film and television work.
Through residency and guest artist programs, students work with nationally and internationally- known artists such as: Bill T. Jones, Jose Limon Co., Momix Dance Co., Pilobolus, avant-garde theater pioneer Richard Foreman, Broadway director Marcia Milgrom Dodge, and Beijing Olympic Designer Han Lixun.
UB students attend: American College Dance Festival, Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, and the United States Institute for Theatre Technology Conference. They participate in a host of opportunities through the International Artistic & Cultural Exchange Program.
Alumni grace international and national stages, work at private and public sector institutions, and have leadership roles at production companies. Graduates work in film, television, and a wide array of live events. Many are awarded fellowships and teaching assistantships to prestigious graduate programs across the country.
Recent graduates have appeared in the current Broadway production of PIPPIN (Tony Awards - 2013 - Best Revival of a Musical), have been featured on NBC’s SMASH, are stage-managing off-Broadway, are designing in NYC, Washington, Chicago, LA and Prague, are touring with national companies as performers and technicians, are automating scenery, and dancing across Europe. We're equally proud of alumni who have thriving careers in the performing arts as we are those students who apply the skills acquired through the study of Theatre & Dance to a multitude of fields, including medicine, law, business, arts management and public policy.
Please enjoy our website and contact us with any questions about our programs.
